What an awesome set of “ideas” the conservative mind has gifted us with recently -
living in a world where facts are what you tell people you believe. Or just how you 'feel' about things and how they really should be.
Fer instance: I would prefer a permanent retirement on a tropical
island somewhere in South East Asia. I cannot comfortably do that
since certain facts get in my way such as – I lose my provincial
health insurance after 7 months away and my guaranteed income
supplement (GIS) is withdrawn after 6 consecutive months away. That
means I cannot quality for a retirement visa anywhere in the world –
including most, if not all 3rd world countries. That's
right, a Canadian who paid into the system for 47 years cannot
qualify for a retirement visa or residence certificate in places like
Ecuador or Cambodia if, he or she, only has CPP/OAS to live on. I'll pause for a moment while you ponder that
one......(Jeopardy music plays)..........
Okay, I'm back. In a fact free world,
like Trump's, or most conservatives here in Canada, circumstances can
be whatever I tell people I believe. If I tell people, and some
will believe what I say, that every Canadian who qualifies for provincial
health insurance and the guaranteed income supplement (GIS) now, can live
anywhere in the world they want to, and their benefits will continue
forever, that becomes, as of now, fact. In this case the government must accept
this fact as true because I've said it and other people believe what
I said. Post truth-politics - meet post truth-reality.
So, here is my official statement for all Canadians on
the new facts concerning retirement abroad:
I heard recently that I
can keep my provincial health insurance and my GIS payments forever,
no matter where I live. I read that on the internet somewhere (I'm pretty sure I bookmarked it) and some people
were talking about how great that is in a retirement forum too (also bookmarked, I think.) Also, I heard somebody who works for the government, or
some other official person, said it's true and I believed them. So, I can retire anywhere I want now – finally. Awesome!
I'll send my new address to you guys
some other time when I decide what tropical island I'll be living on.
I love this new flexible fact thing.
